Bowers & Wilkins is proud to announce that it has been granted a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation. The award is in recognition of ground-breaking work developing the synthetic Diamond Dome Tweeter used in the 800 Series Diamond where the tweeter diaphragm is comprised of synthetic diamond.

The synthetic Diamond Dome Tweeter delivers the highest quality possible in sound reproduction. By pushing the breakup frequency of the dome far above the limits of human hearing, the performance in the audible range is dramatically improved

The synthetic Diamond Dome, an innovative skirted diaphragm using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of synthetic diamond, was a result of continual research into developing loudspeakers that neither add to nor subtract from a sound signal. In a tweeter, this means creating a dome that remains rigid, exhibiting perfectly piston-like behavior, as far up the frequency scale as possible.

Synthetic diamond was chosen for this fundamental component, because it gets closest to the behavior of a hypothetical perfect material; one that would have both infinite stiffness and zero mass. The synthetic diamond was developed in partnership with Element Six, the global leader in synthetic diamond super-materials.

Bowers & Wilkins has a long history of pioneering new acoustic technologies, and this is the third time we have been granted a Queen’s Award for Enterprise after also winning in 2005 for Nautilus tube-loaded tweeters and earlier for being the first loudspeaker manufacturer to utilize the unique acoustic properties of Kevlar® in its loudspeakers.

The 800 Series has come a long way since its introduction in 1979, and has a well-deserved reputation as the place where revolutionary new acoustic technologies are deployed by Bowers & Wilkins. Loudspeakers from the range are found in many of the world’s best recording studios, including London’s Abbey Road Studios, and the homes of discerning audiophiles the world over.

Both the tweeter units and the complete 800 Series Diamond range are manufactured in the UK at the Bowers & Wilkins factory in Worthing, West Sussex. Here a blend of advanced technology and craftsmanship combine to produce what many people regard as the world’s finest loudspeaker range.

When Bowers and Wilkins decided to create a powerful, compact subwoofer for home cinema, they weren’t going to contradict nature. Instead of a box, they based it on a bubble; the natural way of containing internal pressures without resorting to corners and edges. In the PV1D, power is maximized while air pressures are dispersed evenly around a rigid, continuous shell, reducing unwanted vibrations to a bare minimum.
